Root cellar opened here a year or so ago. Their other location is far from my house so this location was a treat. We always went because although not cheap the quality was good. In my last three visits the veg were between average to poor . Limp green beans , overripe pineapple and truly terrible potatoes on my latest visit. Yes , the world has changed but high prices and low quality are still unacceptable. Frustrating. Service was good though

Went today for their grand opening! Absolutely lovely store with 1hr free parking in the back. Great high quality products including many local items. No coffee bar at this one as it’s a tad smaller then their other location. Great prices on veg & fruit. Nice layout. So happy too see another location open up close to home.

The prices here are slightly higher than other local stores, but they have an excellent selection of local meat and produce. I think locally sourced food is important, so it's worth it for me. The lighting and store setup are excellent and the staff is helpful and friendly. I really like that they save the cardboard boxes/trays and keep them next to the checkout so customers can use them to carry their groceries.

We're long time customers of the original location, but the new cook street location has consistently disappointed. The produce is just okay (compared to being always incredible at McKenzie location). But the meat, in particular, tends to go off 3-4 days before its best before date. I am happy to pay a bit more for quality food, but after another $34 whole chicken that stinks, we're done with this place. We're really disappointed that Root Cellar isn't what it was (or maybe still is at McKenzie location). Really a shame.

I resent having to go here sometimes because it's often the only grocery store within walking distance for me; half the time they don't even have the one thing you need to grab or they do have it but it looks terrible and is twice the price as Thrifty's. The staff are always really nice but those I've met who have worked there have nothing but terrible things to say about the work environment/management. Plus, I saw on the news that the owners evicted a low-income family that had been longtime tenants in the apartments upstairs, so that they could move their son in (as if they couldn't afford to move anywhere they wanted...)

I recently visited the new location of The Root Cellar, and I loved it! They carry a great range of local products, carefully selected. I was impressed with the layout and decor, such a great taste! The live music was a great added touch. The house-made sauces are to die for, the carrots were delicious. When visiting Victoria, the Root Cellar is a must stop!

Excellent addition to the neighbourhood. The Root Cellar has spent the time and money to develop an excellent brand and store. I have never been in this location but to walk in and through the produce section was impressive. Very clean and well laid out area with a lot of selection. I stayed at the front of the store for this visit. We headed to the prepared foods and purchased a couple salads. Sweet potato, black bean, cheese, arugula (a few more items) was my choice for $9.99. There was enough for two really. A good range of selection. Set up to purchase items to take to the park or home. Worth a visit

This is a beautiful store with gorgeous products. The vibe they give off is warm and friendly. Unfortunately according to a good friend of mine who worked at Root Cellar, it is not a fun place to work. There are no breaks for employees (no 15 min). The working environment is very stressful and you feel micromanaged all the time. Very little positive feedback for work well done. I have heard that Phil is unpleasant to work with. I think they need to improve their work culture so that it reflects the company values and the shiny branding?

Unfortunately they have discrimatory hiring practices. My husband was hired at this location and he was let go because the store manager thought he was too old. My husband is 42 and they did like his work ability. Awhile back my husband was being hired for the other location until he was asked if he had any health conditions. My husband has Epilepsy and wears a medic ID band. They said that Epilepsy was something they would not take on and rescinded their hiring offer. In an age where we are challenging discrimination this is so distasteful. Please consider this before you choose to shop here.
